How to make homemade chips in air fryer

    1. Wash and scrub your potatoes. You can also peel them if you like, or you can leave the skin on if you prefer it like that.
    2. Cut your potatoes into thin slices if you want thin-cut chips (1cm should be fine), or cut them a bit thicker if you want thick-cut chips.
    3. Soak the slices in a bowl of cold water for at least 15 minutes, this will help to get rid of some of the starch and give the chips a crispier texture after frying.
    4. After 15 minutes, drain the potato slices and pat dry them with a paper towel.
    5. Add a few squirts of cooking spray to your air fryer basket.
    6. Spread a sing layer of chips into the fry basket, do not stack them or overcrowd the basket. Cook multiple batches instead of stacking.
    7. (Optional) Spray with olive oil, then sprinkle with salt and pepper or any other seasonings of your choice if you want.
    8. Set your air fryer temperature to 190°C/380°F and the timer to 7 minutes and let it cook.
    9. After 7 minutes, remove the fry basket and give it a good shake, this will help to ensure even cooking.
    10. Replace the fry basket again and cook for another 7 minutes.
    11. Remove the fry basket again and give it another shake.
    12. Replace the fry basket and cook for the final 7 minutes. If you're doing thick-cut chips, increase this to 9 minutes.
    13. Check on the chips and see if they're crispy enough for your liking, if not, add an extra 2-4 minutes and cook again.

Tips for making the best homemade chips in an air fryer

cut potatoes to make home made chips in air fryer

    • Try to cut your chips as evenly as possible. If you cut some thin and some thick, they will cook unevenly and some will cook perfectly and some will be undercooked.
    • Don't skip the cold water. if you're in a hurry you might be tempted to skip the cold water bath, but don't. This will help to get rid of the starch and give your chips a crispier texture.
    • Be careful not to overcrowd your air fryer basket as this will cause uneven cooking. It's better to cook multiple batches than risk having undercooked chips.
    • If you're adding any type of seasoning, add them before cooking, this will ensure that the seasonings cook and stick to the chips to add more flavour.
    • An air fryer basket can sometimes be a pain to clean, if you want an easy way to clean up after, use an air fryer silicone pot or liner to cook your chips in.
